Your First Car Subscription: 7 Key Points Before You Start

Many drivers are currently shifting from long-term leasing contracts or vehicle ownership to the car subscription model. However, for first-time users, the specific operational details - from the credit check to the return of the vehicle - are often unclear.

Carrivo relies on a structured process with fixed terms and defined costs. This guide outlines the seven essential points you should understand regarding the process, liability, and logistics before booking a vehicle.

1. The Digital Booking Process

The booking process takes place entirely online. You select a vehicle, a mileage package, and a fixed term (typically 12 or 24 months). You then submit your data via a digital booking flow.

The verification process at Carrivo differs from traditional leasing providers. Instead of relying solely on rigid SCHUFA scores, Carrivo uses Open Banking technology to verify that the monthly rate fits your current financial situation. This provides an up-to-date assessment of financial stability.

If a standard approval is not immediately possible based on this data, Carrivo attempts to find a solution rather than issuing a rejection. In these cases, we may offer an option such as a deposit. This is designed to enable access to the vehicle for applicants who can afford the rate but may have a limited credit history.

Decisions are generally issued within 48 hours (excluding weekends and public holidays).

Note: Have your ID and driver’s license ready to complete the verification.

2. The All-Inclusive Monthly Rate

In the car subscription model, the monthly fee covers the fixed costs of vehicle operation. This includes:

  • Comprehensive insurance (Vollkasko)
  • Maintenance and inspections
  • Vehicle tax
  • Registration
  • 24/7 breakdown assistance
  • Seasonal tyres
  • Vehicle usage

Users are responsible for variable costs, such as fuel (or electricity), tolls, and operating fluids (e.g., windshield wiper fluid). A one-time setup fee applies at the start to cover logistics and vehicle preparation. All fixed costs are listed upfront to ensure planning security.

3. The Handover Protocol

Vehicles are collected from the locations of our logistics partners.

At the appointment, you perform a vehicle inspection together with the staff. This follows a standardized checklist regarding the condition of the exterior, interior, tyres, and mileage.

Immediately after this check, you receive a digital handover protocol via email. This document records the condition of the vehicle at the start of the contract. It serves as the reference point for the return of the vehicle. This ensures the assessment of the vehicle’s condition is consistent at both the start and the end of the term.

4. Maintenance and Term Duration

During the term, Carrivo coordinates necessary maintenance appointments and provides breakdown assistance depending on the cause of the issue.

The contract has a fixed duration (e.g., 12, 18, or 24 months). It is not possible to swap vehicles during an ongoing contract. The contract ends automatically at the end of the selected term; no active cancellation is required. To continue driving, you select a new vehicle for a new term.

5. The Return and Damage Assessment

The return process follows the same structure as the handover. You book a return appointment online and return the vehicle to the logistics partner.

The condition of the vehicle is assessed using the Carrivo Damage Catalogue (Schadenkatalog). This document clearly defines the difference between "normal signs of use" (which are accepted) and "damage" (which is chargeable). The assessment is based on objective criteria and photos, not subjective opinion.

6. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Can I change the vehicle during the contract term?

A: No. You can select a new vehicle once the current fixed term has expired.

Q: What happens if I exceed the included kilometers?

A: A fixed price per additional kilometer is defined in the contract and applies at the end of the term.

Q: Is insurance included?

A: Our vehicles are insured, and your monthly payment includes comprehensive insurance coverage. This means your liability is limited to the agreed deductible.

Q: What happens in the event of damage?

A: Damage is assessed according to the Damage Catalogue. A deductible applies per claim. You may book optional packages to reduce this deductible.

7. Summary

The car subscription model is defined by the following characteristics:

  • Planable fixed terms (12/18/24 months)
  • One monthly rate covering fixed vehicle costs
  • Digital processing
  • Automatic contract termination
  • Standardised return criteria

This model prioritizes access and cost transparency over ownership.
